Use of the Internet in the near future

Foresight look to the use of the Internet in the near future.

I foresee the wider use of the Internet in the future. Home Networks will grow to encompass the whole house. Where the fridge will send an email to its owner telling you that you are out of milk and it has purchased it for you, so stop on the way home and pick it up along with other food items. You will be able to purchase meals and place them in the oven which will keep them cool until you send it an email telling it to start cooking. All of your home will communicate with itself and you over the internet. Your windows will know when to be open or shut based on your E-glass being clear or opaque. You will be able to monitor your children at school, on the way home and even while at home. Better and more affordable security cameras will allow HD quality full color security from your personal home page (The page you control your home operations from). You will be able to tell your robotic vacuum cleaner to clean the house while everyone is out, that way not disturbing anyone but the family cat.

Speaking of the family pet, I see their collars with embedded technology that will monitor the pet’s health. It will cross reference with your online day planner and schedule the most convenient time for you to drop off your pet and get the needed medical attention. Your roof will be covered in 1/10" high performance solar cells that are controlled by the home server to be at optimum performance at all times, slightly tilting them to gather more sun. This again will be linked to the power companies’ computer system allowing for so much free electricity to enter the grid hence the need to burn coal and oil is reduced by 90%.

You car will also be on the internet and communicating with your home, your phone and cars around it on the road. Cars will be able to communicate between themselves over short distance by way of Wi-Fi signals. This would reduce the amount of accidents and traffic congestion on our roadways in major cities. By having cars communicate they could over ride the drivers input to a point and apply gas and breaks faster or more smoothly allowing for better gas mileage. When cars however get involved in an accident they will be able to send exact GPS coordinates to police cars and rescue teams closest to the accident. This would shorten response times thereby saving many more lives. You car would email you and your mechanic letting everyone know that the self diagnostics system found that you need a new belt, a lower radiator hose and probably an oil change. It will also cross reference with your online day planner and schedule the most convenient time for you drop off the car and get the needed work done.

Business will become more intertwined with the internet so much so that some companies will only have a cyber store. With on-demand shipping and manufacturing, production and shipping aspects of retail will be streamlined. I also believe that many more jobs in the market will be done at home via telecommute. Telecommuting will become more popular, allowing entire offices to be replaced with VPNs spanning, potentially, the globe. Video conferencing, instant messaging, file transfers, etc. will make the VPN office at least as productive as any physical one and will all but eliminate the need for costly office space rental and maintenance.

I envisage a 10 fold speed/data transfer rate increase.

I ideate the internet will be highly integrated into all class rooms from elementary to college down to tertiary institutions and beyond. We will see touch screen desktops indicating there will be no more need for paper books or paper to do work on. E-paper will be able to communicate with your desk at school and allow you to complete and email your assignments to your teacher or professor. Where possible, and driven by the need to reduce consumption of paper goods, bills, statements, letters, brochures, catalogs, etc. will be replaced with electronic equivalents. PDF documents will more often be designed with accessibility features fully utilized and the more efficient open source and freeware PDF viewers will spread making the use of these documents ever more desirable.

I envisage the internet being cleaned up as well. Pornographic site will be moved into a domain all to itself(.xxx domain). That way, it will be easier accessed (for those that wish to access) and easier for parents to control access by children.

In ten year’s time, there will be a need to be on atleast IPv8 because we will have run out of IP addresses. This is simply because all nodes connected to the internet such as fridge, windows, cars, and other house gadgets will all have IP Addresses assigned to them.

There will no longer be petty wars and the world would have moved on to online gaming. Here two old farts play Playstation5 and whoever wins is declared the winner of any feud.

The Internet will move into the Third World countries and helping to improve the standards of living. It will allow the top doctors from the Western Word and overseas generally to set up a single robotic doctor and via the Internet using video and audio inputs perform surgeries in remote locations. This will also allow for doctors to examine patients from afar and not risk life if contagious agents exist.

Meanwhile the capabilities of the Internet to deliver information and other forms of communication will see it gaining more relevance.

International barriers will be eroded ever more by the maturation of today's Internet generation, accustomed to the ability to communicate with their counterparts in foreign lands. The world will grow ever more tight-knit, cultural barriers disintegrating.

The Internet will be used for anything imaginable.

In ten years time, more daily tasks will be totally dependent on the Internet, whether it is making phone calls, watching television, paying bills or transacting.

The world we know today by then will be so engulfed in the Internet that we will decide to cut ourselves off from reality and permanently live in the Internet. The world could be made such better place if the Internet is used wisely, on the other hand it could be the downfall of modern Western civilization.
